The Full Story
King Square Shopping Centre
A 70V distributed audio system for a Markham shopping centre, with TOA processing, indoor and outdoor speakers, paging and independent zone control.
Project Background
King Square Shopping Centre in Markham brings together retail, dining and shared public spaces. These areas have different operating needs, but they also form one visitor experience. Avvantage designed and installed an integrated audio system to support background music and public announcements throughout the property.
The project combined distributed loudspeakers, centralized processing and independent zone controls. Its purpose was to give the operations team a coordinated way to manage sound across the shopping centre, including spaces that differ substantially in activity, construction and exposure to the outdoors.
The Challenge
A multi-level retail property cannot be treated as a single listening room. Dining areas, shopping corridors, lobbies, parking facilities and outdoor spaces have different background noise and coverage requirements. Music that suits a busy food area may need a different level elsewhere, while announcements must remain useful across the intended zones.
The system also had to balance performance with the project budget. Simply adding more speakers would not resolve the need for organized routing and practical controls. The design needed an infrastructure that staff could use during daily operations and that could be maintained as one installation.
The Solution
Avvantage implemented a 70V distributed audio system built around TOA matrix processing and multi-channel amplification. Loudspeakers were distributed throughout the property, with indoor ceiling speakers covering retail and common areas. Klipsch all-weather loudspeakers served the outdoor spaces.
A centralized equipment rack brought processing and amplification together. Remote paging and four zone-control panels gave staff access to day-to-day functions without requiring them to work directly at the main equipment rack for every adjustment. This connected the technical infrastructure to the way the property is operated.
Coverage extended across three retail levels, dining areas, garage and lobby spaces, and outdoor areas. Independent controls allow audio levels to be adapted to different zones rather than forcing every part of the centre to use the same setting.
Equipment & Specifications
- 70V distributed audio architecture.
- TOA M-9000M2 matrix processing.
- TOA DA-500F-HL amplification.
- TOA ceiling loudspeakers for indoor coverage.
- Klipsch all-weather loudspeakers outdoors.
- Remote paging and four zone-control panels.
- Coverage across three retail levels and associated public areas.
Project Photography
The existing project images show the shopping centre and its equipment installation. These views connect the public-facing venue to the centralized audio infrastructure that supports it. The case study documents the completed system and the operational requirements behind its design.
Project Outcome
The completed installation provides one platform for background music and targeted announcements across King Square. Independent zone control lets staff adapt levels to different spaces and activities, supporting both the visitor atmosphere and the practical communication needs of the property.
