King City Cinema & Star Ceiling

Project Background

A King City homeowner wanted a private cinema that combined controlled sound with a refined residential interior. The existing room had irregular proportions and reflective surfaces, producing noticeable echo and reduced dialogue clarity. Avvantage approached the transformation as a complete room design, considering the walls, ceiling and floor together.

The homeowners wanted continuous floor-to-ceiling wall treatments and a polished appearance. Visible acoustic foam and commercial-looking panels did not fit the brief. Acoustic performance therefore needed to be integrated beneath finishes that felt appropriate to the home.

The Challenge

The room was not symmetrical, so reflection behaviour could not be addressed through a generic layout. Hard surfaces contributed to flutter echo and excessive reverberation, reducing the focus of speech and the precision of the soundstage. The treatment had to respond to the actual architecture.

At the same time, controlling reflections should not make a room feel excessively damped. The design needed to balance absorption with a comfortable sense of space. Visual continuity, ceiling atmosphere and a warm floor finish were also part of the homeowner’s expectations.

The Solution

Avvantage developed a layered acoustic approach. High-density insulation was added within wall cavities to support the room’s acoustic foundation and reduce hollow-wall behaviour. Full-height custom panels then concealed selected acoustic materials behind fabric finishes, creating a continuous architectural treatment.

Different areas served different acoustic roles. Absorptive treatment addressed unwanted reflections, while other surfaces helped preserve spatial energy. This kept the design focused on a controlled cinema environment rather than simply covering every surface with the same material.

A custom fibre-optic star ceiling combined atmosphere with overhead acoustic treatment. Cinema carpeting and acoustic underlayment addressed floor reflections and contributed to comfort. Together, the wall, ceiling and floor work formed one integrated interior.
